Running 10k for 10k
If you haven’t heard, I do website design. Yep, that’s me. In an effort to wrangle new clients sometimes I find myself doing things that would otherwise never cross my mind. This time I’m running a 10k race, at midnight.
The story actually starts with my roommate, Damon. He’s recently decided that he doesn’t like it downtown and would rather move to Long Beach. I’m not sure why in the world anyone would want to move to Long Beach (sorry Joseph) but apparently he does. In the search for a new roommate I ran into a very nice young woman. Her name is Rebecca.
When Rebecca came over to check out the upstairs and subsequently sign a lease, we got into small talk about what each of us do for drinking money. She mentioned that she sells student housing to new students and I mentioned that I do website design and marketing. The next day she called me up and asked me if I’d be interested in putting in a proposal for their new website. Perfect timing! Of course I said yes.
I met with Rebecca for lunch and after we were finished talking about the proposal and her shiny new website she invited me to a race tonight – at midnight – it’s 10k. Trying not to look like a wuss I told her that I’d be happy to run. In reality, it probably will be a ton of fun so I’m pretty excited about going. I called my friend Cici and asked her to join me and she jumped right on board.
The website contract isn’t really worth $10,000, at least not right away. Maybe after a year of maintenance it could approach that. It just kinda sounded good for the title. But the race really is 10k – seriously.
UPDATE: Cici and I got to USC for the start of the run and they had ended up closing registration early. Their excuse: we have too many runners already. It’s a city street, I think it could accommodate two more people. Anyway, they refused to let us run and informed us that we’d be escorted off if we attempted to run.
