Fourth of July

For the Fourth of July Duke and I decided to go see a good friend, Jeff, up in Oxnard. Oxnard is a small beach community which is located about an hour north of Los Angeles. We left on Friday and quickly ran into bumper-to-bumper traffic. Along the way, Duke decided that laying in the back of the Jeep was just too sunny and he would like to be in the shade. Apparently the best place for shade is under my feet. Keep in mind that I was driving on the freeway. Well he jumped over the back seat and crawled under my feet. Fortunately he knocked the Jeep into neutral on his way over which is probably good because I’m willing to bet he sat down on the pedals. As we coasted to a stop on the freeway I dug my feet under this 75lb boxer and got back into gear so we could get off at the next exit.

Duke and I finally made it to Oxnard where Jeff and Mocha, a 4 year old miniature australian shepard, was waiting. Mocha and Duke got along very well, which was a big relief. The first stop was the grocery store so we could stock up on some grub for the Holiday. Once that was done the drinking began and we could officially relax.

On Saturday we took the dogs to the beach which was the first time Duke has ever been off the leash. I was pretty impressed with him as he came back when I called and managed not to scare anyone or eat any other dogs. The dogs started drinking the salt water so we thought it was a good time to take them back. A friend of Jeff came over for dinner. She was a trip. Kinda reminded me of a modern day hippie. She never goes anywhere without her pipe. As soon as we kicked her out we had 15 minutes to get outside before the fireworks started. Jeff thought it would be a brilliant idea to ride bicycles over to the beach to check them out. Never mind the fact that I haven’t been on a bicycle in years, or the fact that we were both wasted or even the crowds of people filling the streets. We got on and managed to make it to the beach just in time.

The next day was pretty much recovery time. We slept in and had left-over potatoes for breakfast. I packed the Jeep up so Duke and I could start our 3 day journey to Milwaukee.
