Officially Left Wisconsin

Yesterday I went to the California DMV and applied for my California drivers lisence. After a few long lines they handed me a test sheet of paper and asked me to go sit with the pimple popping hoodlums in the corner. Huh? Apparently they didn’t trust that I could drive so they were gunna make me take the test again. Thankfully, I didn’t have to do a road test. Just the written one. I sat down and muddled my way through tough questions about smoking in the car with children under the age of 18 and which way to turn your wheels when parking uphill. The one that always gets me is what to do when a school bus has it’s lights flashing. Of course, they put that one on there!

Long, frustrating story short, I just barely passed. Woohoo! Then she asked me for my Wisconsin drivers lisence and told me she was going to punch a hole through it. A small piece of me died as soon as I heard that. I quickly perked up and queried about my motorcycle class. Crud. I had to take another test. This one seemed a bit easier though. Okay, now that I passed that one too they decided they would be able to give me a drivers lisence to drive both a car and a motorcycle. I was in business! Then she handed me a sheet of paper.

Turns out that in California they don’t believe in instant gratification. You’ll never get an actual ID at the DMV. Instead, they just mail it to you. I would be so upset if I was 16 and all I got for passing the road test was a lousey piece of paper. The good news is that she forgot to punch a hole through my Wisconsin drivers lisence so it’s still in tact although I’m sure it won’t work properly if someone attempts to run a check on it.

That’s the story of how I officially gave up my Wisconsin residency and became one of many in California. Now I’ve just gotta figure out how to transfer my car here. Oye.
