Another “Wrong” Advertisement

I’ve been reading blog after blog about Obama and his connections with Fannie Mae. I’m not interested in arguing about his relationship as I don’t know the facts, though it would be interesting to learn. What annoys the hell out of me is when people twist the words of their competition and even then, can’t seem to get it quite right. This particular advertisement is a Republican ad slinging mud at the Democrats. I’m not trying to imply that this never goes the other way around, this just happens to be the one I keep hearing about. So please spare me the rehortic about how McCain is simply reacting to “wrong” ads by Obama. They both do it. Listen to this latest McCain ad:

ANNCR: What Obama says…
BARACK OBAMA: It would be unacceptable for executives of these institutions to earn a windfall.
ANNCR: …Is not what he does.
Meet Jim Johnson, former Fannie Mae CEO.
Fannie cooked the books and Johnson made millions.
Then Obama asked him to pick his VP.
And raise thousands for his campaign.
Barack Obama. More empty words.
JOHN MCCAIN: I’m John McCain and I approve this message.

Now, go back and press that play button again, but this time listen carefully. The advertisement shows Obama stating that “It would be unacceptable for executives of these institutions to earn a windfall.” The advertisement then goes on to imply that Obama has worked with Johnson for mutual gain. In order to justify this the advertisement states that Obama asked for help from Johnson in terms of campaign fund raising and to help pick his VP.

Wait a minute, I’m utterly confused as to how Johnson “earning a windfall” and Johnson “raising thousands for his campaign” have anything to do with each other. Whether or not Obama (or McCain for that matter) stopped the executives from earning a “windfall” is not the point. The problem is that McCain’s advertisement made it seem like Obama was putting money in Johnsons pocket, not the other way around. If you can draw a correlation here between Obama and the payroll of Fannie Mae executives with the act of assisting Obama in fund raising and still believe that based on this advertisement Obama has empty words, it seems that you have an empty mind.

If you’re going to attempt to bring down the other side rather than pushing yourself up (the disgracefulness of that is another issue) I would suggest that you at least pay more attention to your own advertisements to make sure that they even make sense.

Good job Republicans. You’ve got my vote! … McCain, just make sure you don’t die in office, okay? I’m not sure how I feel about a pitbull with lipstick running my country.
