Jeff of Death
I just got back from my diving trip, what an absolutely amazing experience! I’m now a certified scuba diver for open water and adventure diving. Scary, huh? It was by far the coolest thing I’ve done thus far. Being 10 stories underwater you look up and can’t see a damn thing. You’re eyes feel like their being sucked out of your head and then you turn around to see a bunch of barracuda headed your way. I have some pictures but I’m not sure how they turned out yet. I’ll get them off the camera tonight.
The only thing I didn’t see that I really wanted to were sharks! I know I was swimming with them cause my diving buddy freaked out when she saw them but I must have been looking the other way. However, I did see every color of fish imaginable, absolutely beautiful coral, stingrays, mondo green turtles, barracudas and sea snakes. I also went through the certification for underwater naturalist but I doubt I’ll actually remember any of the animals I learned about. It’s such a rush being underwater that I always forgot everything that was just told to me on the surface.
The 2nd night on the boat I also did a night dive. Imagine what the lasers looked like in Star Wars when one battleship would shoot at another. That’s exactly what it looked like from the bottom of the ocean when I looked up at the other divers descending with their flashlights. All you can see are white beams in the water. The night dive was pretty cool cause when I would turn my light off and everyone else had theirs on I could see thousands of little red eyes glowing in the coral. I was told they were just slugs but it was still creepy! You have to be careful night diving because it’s really easy to get lost.
My 2nd diving buddy, Caz, started calling me “Jeff of Death” when I got into the habit of either kicking her mask off or pulling the regulator out of her mouth with my arms. Unfortunately the name stuck and everyone on the boat called me that. It’s even on things like my training books. Fortunately I didn’t actually kill her. Ironically enough, we stayed diving buddies through the rest of the trip.
Absolutely amazing time. I’m still in Cairns for another 2 days and then I’ll head to Sydney for a week. Hopefully it’s not too cold! I’m headed out for some drinks with my new diving buddies in a few minutes so I’m sure we will have plenty of pictures!
