Surfing 101

Today I woke up early to make sure I made it to the beach on time. The area where I had arranged for surfing lessons was about an hour and a half walk from my hostel. I made it there with enough time to grab a cup of coffee before I made a fool of myself.

After getting the hang of putting on a wet suit I have much more respect for women who can zip up their own dresses. The zipper on the wet suit is in the back. Talk about inconvenient. I felt like a sausage. I can’t even imagine what a fat person in a wet suit feels like.

We learned the basics of handling a surf board and how to (theoretically) stand up once you get into a wave. Enough talking, it was time to see how it really worked.

I did surprisingly well. I did catch the surf board once in the melon but thankfully I have a hard head. Over the course of about an hour and forty five minutes in the water I managed to get up and actually ride a wave three times. I was pretty damn proud of myself.

Now I had a huge headache from swallowing too much salt water and was hungry enough to eat a buffalo. I headed to a restaurant that I knew had Newcastle on tap. Can’t wait to go again!
